Buddhism and American culture: I’ve been meditating in Zazen Buddhist’s sitting techniques as well as in traditional closed-eye sessions for a couple years now. I used to buy those tiny, tacky, obese Buddha sculptures from gift shops. Then my friend, Alex, told me that those sculptures are unrealistic to the true Buddha image which is the third image on the above layout. Americans are still making this mistake and it bothers me. The Buddha who lives inside me does not excessively eat and she is not tempted by the sin of gluttony. I’ve seen this depiction of the Buddha in advertisements for music or ironically in books about the Zen practice.
Yoga means union, yogi means one who is united, or something along those lines. Some people use yogi as the word for someone who is enlightened. While others use yogi to describe a very specific tradition in India.
